GUEST BOOK I CONTACT I INDEX

Temples and Monasteries in Neohori and its neighbourhood are to be visited due to the works of popular art that enhance the traditional religious sentiment of the region's inhabitants. Besides the four churches of Neohori and the four monasteries that are found in its vicinity, there are several other churches of different sizes many of which were built in the Middle Ages.

Aghios Dimitrios church in Neohori, built in 1768, possibly to replace an older and smaller one, can be taken as an example of wooden Temple of Pelion from the time of the Ottoman domination (according to Apostolos Zaharou "The church of Aghios Dimitrios of Neohori" Volos, 1989).

Externally, the temple is a simple basilica, but inside it is a basilica with blind domes in its roof, with marvellous hagiographies from the famous Pagonis and magnificent woodcut representative samples of the ecclesiastical art of the 18th century. From 1979 this temple was declared a monument to be preserved (UN). A second temple was built later, in 1795, to honour the "Creation of Virgin Mary".

The temple of Aghion Anargyron was built recently to replace another one, built in 1795. The temple of Aghios Georgios was erected in 1930.
