Afissos is the port of Neohori, lying at the Pagasitikos gulf. It is around 12 kilometres far away from Neohori or/and 24 km from Volos. In the Middle Age this region has been called Avissos. The historian Argiris Filippifis reports, that it has been called “Afsos”, too (book: “Geografia Meriki” from 1815). Afissos was founded by people coming from Neohori, because they used to live here during the winter time, for the harvest of their olive planting. Some fishermen were living here, too.
The wonderful beaches of Afissos and the port were the reason for permanent development and growing up of this settlement. This is confirmed by the Byzantine and Venetian ruins of fortresses that have been found in former times. In 1895 the church of Aghia Marina was built; today it is the main church in Afissos.
In the present days, Afissos is the most popular touristic centre at the west side of the peninsula Pilion. This expansion started in the sixties, when the first European tourists came to Greece. Quite a lot of them especially German speaking one built up their own houses at the southern end of Afissos. Now, this quarter is called “Germanica”. In former times, Afissos was a nice dreaming fishermen village; today it is a modern centre for all tourists offering a wide range of divertissements to its visitors, with modern hotels/ apartments and rooms. The promenade is plenty of bars and restaurants, cafeteria and souvenir shops, that complete the entire tourist’s wishes.
The wonderful sandy beaches are at Abovos, Lagoudi and Kalifteri – unforgettable an idyllic swimming by full moon shining – hearing out from the dark of the Sea the melody of a lonely singing fisherman! Romantic pure!
